Greetings
from the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee. Hope you
are in receipt of the News Letter of July 2009. We wish to
update you further on the Thirty First Annual conference.
Announcement 1: Thirty First Annual Conference of IASP and Call
for papers The Thirty First Annual Conference of IASP will
be held at Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati during
November 3-5, 2009. The main theme of the conference is
Population and Disease. The Millennium Development Goals
to be achieved by 2015 relate to specific targets in terms of
child health and mortality, maternal health and mortality,
adolescent health and reduction of burden of HIV/AIDS, Malaria
and Tuberculosis. In the light of several efforts being made
towards improving the health status of various sections of the
population, there is a need for the Demographic fraternity to
focus on the health and disease related aspects in terms of
current status, differentials, trends, determinants, and policy
and programme initiatives as well as implications. We also need
to understand the disease burden classified by communicable and
infectious disease besides the others. The conference would
comprise panel discussions and presentation of invited and
contributed research papers and posters on the sub-themes listed
below: 1. Reproductive health including maternal mortality
2. Child care, morbidity and mortality 3. Adolescent and adult
health 4. Infectious and Non communicable diseases 5.
Epidemiological transition 6. Research on disease burden 7.
Disease burden methodological issues including innovations in
methodology and use of data on disease burden 8. Linking
Research findings with economics by monetizing disease/mortality
burden to the country and household and presenting alternatives
for Government action 9 Emerging disease pattern and the likely
burden on Government 10. Critical appraisal of health policy
form disease burden perspective that would lead to policy
changes 11. Sexual health 12. Methodological issues related to
large scale sample surveys The IASP members who have
been actively involved in multi disciplinary research on
population and disease are encouraged to make use of this rare
opportunity of the annual conference to share their thoughts,
views and research findings on the sub themes listed above. The
members are requested to contribute papers/posters on any of the
sub-themes. Your paper may identify gaps and or suggest ways and
means to improve the programmes aimed at improving the health
status. Your paper/poster could be a case study or based on
primary or secondary data at district, state or national level
or it might raise some of the methodological issues of
significance. Your paper/poster must bring out the emerging
issues in line with the main theme of the conference.

The modalities
for submission of the papers and posters are broadly as follows:

Prepare your
abstract for paper/poster on one of the sub-themes, as per the
attached format. The |
|
abstract
should be upto 250 words. The last date for submission is
September 5, 2009. |

An expert
committee will scrutinise and select the papers/posters to be

The authors
whose paper/poster get selected will be intimated by
September 30,2009 |

The complete
paper including the abstract, tables and annexure, if any,
should not exceed 15 pages in |
|
1.5 line
space. The full papers of the selected abstracts should reach us
latest by October 20, 2009. |
|
The selected
authors should bring 30 copies of the paper for distribution
during the conference. |
|
The volume of
selected abstracts will be brought out and distributed during
the conference. |
|
Due to
paucity of funds, all authors of the selected papers are
requested to try to manage for TA/DA |
|
from their
parent institutions. Those authors who are not able to manage
their traveling allowance (TA) |
|
from their
institution may apply well in advance to IASP. The TA may be
reimbursed to the selected |
|
authors for
to and fro travel expenses by shortest train route from their
head quarter to Tirupati by AC |
|
3 Tier. The
train booking for both ways should be arranged by members
themselves. Please note that |
|
no claim will
be entertained without photocopy of the tickets in support of
TA. It may further be noted |
|
that if a
paper/poster have more than one author, only one of the author
(who presents the paper) will |
|
be reimbursed
of his/her travel expenses. |
|
The members,
whose papers are not selected or who have not submitted the
paper, but wish to attend |
|
the
conference are welcome to do so at their own travel expenses.
However, local hospitality will be |
|
accorded to
them. |
|
The members
who desire to come with family will have to get all accompanying
members registered in |
|
order that
the food and stay expenses are to be borne by the association.
|
|
|
The decision
to participate in the conference should be intimated latest by
October 10, 2009.
Other details
regarding the conference and stay arrangement will be communicated
in due course to the participants of the conference.
Announcement
2: Chandra Sekharan Award
Papers on the conference theme are invited from young members (
below 30 years of age) for the Chandra Sekharan award. The papers
selected by the Screening Committee would be invited for
presentation during the Annual Conference. The eligible members are
requested to send the abstracts by Aug 16, 2009 (alongwith age
proof) and full paper by September 5, 2009 to the General Secretary,
IASP. The author of the selected paper would be intimated by
September 30, 2009. The first and the second best papers will be
presented with Chandra Sekharan Award during the annual conference.
The young scholars whose papers are selected will be reimbursed up
to maximum AC-3 Tier sleeper charges for their travel if requested
in advance. Please note that the paper should not be of joint
authorship.

3: General Body Meeting of IASP
The general body meeting of IASP will be held on November 4,
2009 at Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati at 1800 hrs. The
agenda items would be circulated in due course.

4: Prof K B Pathak Memorial Award
The EC in its last meeting held on April 26, 2009 has resolved
to constitute an annual award in memory of Prof K B Pathak. The
award would be presented in the annual conference of IASP to the
author of the best paper in the field of Population and Health with
significant contribution in terms of methodological innovation. The
papers must have been published in any refereed journal on
Population/Demography and Health in the past two years. The author
must be below 40 years of age. The papers along with age proof must
be sent to the General Secretary of IASP before September 15, 2009
Announcement
5: Appeal for Generous Contributions
The printing charge of Demography India is increasing and in
view of this, an appeal was made earlier for generous contributions
to the corpus fund of IASP so as to ensure timely publication of
Demography India. Many members have informed their willingness to
contribute for this generous cause. Prof P. M. Kulkarni and Sri C.
V. S. Prasad have contributed Rs 10,000 each while Sri Muniappan
contributed Rs 1,000 for the corpus fund. The members of Board of
Trustees and the Executive Committee request all the members to
contribute to the corpus fund and strengthen IASP. Members are also
requested to inform us about any organisations that are willing to
donate money for the corpus fund.
